  • David Hawthorne has been working in Harvard Square for almost 15 years, making, restoring, and rehairing bows for violins, violas, cellos and basses. He trained in this field with the late William Salchow, of New York, and with Stéphane Thomachot in Paris. He has won numerous awards in this country and in Europe for his handmade bows, and enjoys a reputation as one of the top bowmakers in the country. He has been making bows for almost 40 years. He writes for the Strad and Strings magazine, and teaches at the North Bennet St. School. He has music degrees from Berklee and New England Conservatory.

He is also a specialist in baroque style bows; many top players in this field use his bows here in Boston, and all over the country.

Previously, we were limiting the number of rehairs we could take, since Mr. Hawthorne needed time to make bows. However, a new person is now working in the shop: Mariia Gorkun. She is a talented bowmaker from Ukraine, who was Mr. Hawthorne’s student for some years. Because she is here, the shop, once again, can accommodate bow rehairs for everyone. Her exceptional abilities as a violin player help to evaluate bows, both for the shop, and for players who come in to try bows.

We are open 9:30-5:00 weekdays, and usually on Saturdays, also, but please call ahead to check if we are in, and if you want to have your bow rehaired, please call for an appointment. Usually we can rehair any bow overnight.

Many musicians have ordered a custom made bow, after playing a Hawthorne bow. If you are interested in trying a bow, or finding out about ordering a bow, please contact us by phone or email. We offer bows made by other makers, too. The shop sells good student level bows and rare antique bows as well. We offer appraisals and insurance evaluations.

We have an informative website: violinbows.net, and a facebook page: David Hawthorne Violin Bows, and an interesting group on facebook: Baroque Bow Making.
