  • For over 50 years, Tutoring Plus has been providing out-of-school-time support to Cambridge youth. In 1964, a group of Cambridge mothers seeking more academic support for their children tapped into a new source – MIT student tutors. The Mothers Executive Committee of the Cambridge Neighborhood House established an initial partnership with the MIT Social Service Committee, launching one of the longest-running out-of-school time academic programs for Cambridge youth. Its evolution from a community-driven effort initiated by parents and MIT students to a professional organization could not have been achieved without the support of volunteers and community partnerships.

Today, T+ operates one-on-one tutoring centers for youth in grades 4 through 12, as well as enrichment programs throughout the year that are focused on math, science, coding, engineering, and media literacy. By positioning the organization to take advantage of the wealth of human and organizational resources that surround it, Tutoring Plus’ goal is to identify and offer programs that increase the skills and capabilities of our youth. This includes not only academic skills, but social-emotional learning as well. We believe that helping students build these capacities prepares them for short-term success and achievement, and lifelong independence and self-sufficiency.

As a trusted organization within the Port neighborhood, Tutoring Plus has been recognized for its dedication to youth and families. In June of 2012, T+ was honored as “Non Profit of the Year” at the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce’s Excellence in Business Awards. The award recognizes a “Cambridge-area nonprofit organization that demonstrates superior performance, quality and consistency in the pursuit of its mission and evokes community spirit and participation.” In April of 2013, T+ was presented the “Organization of the Year Award” from Cambridge Community Television.
